My name is Jordan. I live here in Puerto Armuelles.

I’m here for my ministry. But, to be here, to stay here, it’s on my own coin. So, I had to find a job.

Before I left the United States to move here I had to figure out a way to make some type of cash. I asked somebody who had already been abroad, a friend of mine, and asked him what he did for work.

And he said, look online and see what you can find.

The one that just fell right into my lap was my pretty much teaching English.

And it gives me more than enough to stay here in Puerto.

I  had to get something quick that I already knew how to do, that’s not going to take very long to find. And it just so happened that Open English was there.

Open English, to work for them, I had to speak English fluently was the number one main thing that they stressed, which I do, I’m from America.

The other one is either, living abroad, they didn’t say it while hiring, but they really like the fact that you’re living abroad and you’re living amongst people who are of a foreign tongue, hopefully Spanish is what they were looking for.

So, I told them I lived in Central America, Spanish, boom.

I knew how to speak English, boom.

Also, one of the prerequesits for working for them was that I had to to be able to work weekend evenings, because that’s the most undesired shift. And of course I’m very malleable. I didn’t have a job. So, that works.

So, that’s why I was able to swiftly and an easy transition into working for Open English.  It’s good.

It took a process of about a month to get hired.

It’s rewarding, it is. I get to teach people English, something that they need for work or, so you are actually helping somebody get a skill set, which is kind of really rewarding to you as a person, because you’re helping somebody else out.

But also, it’s easy to teach.

The tools that Open English gives you to teach is, it helps you as a teacher to teach somebody.

I’m going to say probably in about a month I’ll put it on cruise control and be able to teach anybody on that site how to speak English, and I’ll be comfortable with it.

  1. I current.y live in China and have taught Oral English in a private university for the past three years and am beginning my fourth year. I am looking for ways to supplement my income when I retire in about 18 months. This report gave me something to think about as a way to give me extra cash to live the life I am dreaming about.

  2. I’m currently in Mexico and putting in all kinds of online applications for teaching English online as that’s all I can do because I’m sort of out in the wilderness with no transportation – even going to the store for food is a chore – but I’m finding out that there’s more to the requirements than being able to speak English. I have multiple Masters’ degrees from reputable universities in English speaking countries (well, one, anyway), a TESOL certificate from a London teachers’ college, but I’m not getting “you speak English – boom.” I’m getting “you need a headset” “you need to send us a sample video of HOW you’d teach” or a whole load of other things. It’s not that easy anymore!!

    • Hi Penny,

Thanks for sharing your experience. That is too bad.

I did a more recent article on someone getting a job through Boxfish. She describes a more rigorous interview process as well, including a video. (Here is that link.)

It looks like more and more places are requiring you submit a some kind of video showing your teaching method/style or at least your interaction style on video.

I wrote another article with general advice on making money teaching English online. I quote a recommendation to try these venues:
      – TutorABC & Italki (as an informal teacher) – if you’re living someplace cheap and don’t have much experience teaching
      – Verbling & Italki (as professional teacher) – if you have more teaching experience
      – Udemy – if you have time, don’t need to make money right away, and can create good teaching videos. You can create a passive income and start building your following.
      – Offline – if you want to teach but have no experience and no savings
Here is the link to that article.

  3. Sounds great. Loss of internet and electricity are concerns for me, as many companies want clear connections on demand. How do you deal with that? And is the internet service truly so spotty in parts of Panama? How do I know where to go to get the best online service? THANKS!
